To understand our place in this reality, we must recognize that life is not a permanent substance like a rock, but rather a temporary process similar to a fire or a wave.
The vastness of the cosmos provides a profound context for this human experience. When looking at a clear night sky, it is difficult to grasp the true size of what lies beyond the atmosphere because there are no familiar landmarks to judge distance. Today, we know that the Milky Way is just one of over 100 billion galaxies, each containing billions of stars and likely even more planets. In the 1920s, astronomers discovered that the universe is expanding, meaning that in the distant past, everything was much closer together in a hot, dense state known as the Big Bang.
The challenge of the modern age is to reconcile these seemingly conflicting truths. On one hand, we are collections of atoms governed by the same physical forces as everything else in the sky. On the other hand, we are thinking, feeling beings who care about our lives and one another. Accepting that we are part of a physical system requires a new way of thinking where meaning is not something we discover written in the stars, but something we create through our own choices and values.
