Introduction to Isolated Island Communities
Oliver Sacks begins his exploration of the intersection between geography and neurology by reflecting on a lifelong obsession with islands. This fascination started with childhood memories of the Isle of Wight and stories of legendary mariners, eventually evolving from a romantic interest into a scientific curiosity. Islands serve as unique experiments of nature, where geographic isolation forces life forms to take separate evolutionary paths. This isolation can produce singular animal species, but it can also create unique human communities defined by shared biological traits.
The concept of a world without color first occurred to Sacks through personal experiences with visual migraines. These episodes caused temporary losses of color perception, sparking a deep curiosity about human vision. This interest deepened after he treated a painter who lost his ability to see, imagine, or dream in color following a brain injury. While this patient felt his world was impoverished, Sacks began to wonder about people born with congenital achromatopsia, a condition where individuals lack functioning cone cells in their retinas and must rely entirely on rod cells.
History provides examples of how isolated communities can adapt to shared sensory differences. On the island of Martha’s Vineyard in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a high incidence of hereditary deafness led to the birth of a unique culture where everyone used sign language. This environment meant that being deaf was not a disability but simply a different way of being. Sacks wondered if a similar community of the colorblind existed, which led his search to Pingelap, a tiny atoll in Micronesia where nearly ten percent of the population carries the gene for total colorblindness.
To investigate this community, Sacks organized an expedition with an ophthalmologist and a Norwegian scientist named Knut Nordby. Nordby provided a unique perspective because he was born with achromatopsia himself, yet he became an expert in the physics of sight. Because he relied entirely on rod cells, bright daylight was physically painful and blinding, a struggle known as photophobia. However, in dim light, he was more adept than those with normal vision, developing a heightened sensitivity to texture, tone, movement, and depth.
The journey to Pingelap required traveling through the vastness of the Pacific, a region shaped by both ancient migrations and modern military intervention. The travelers stopped at Johnston Atoll, a restricted military site used for nuclear testing and the storage of chemical weapons. The island had been transformed from a bird sanctuary into a toxic environment enveloped in a chemical haze. Further stops in the Marshall Islands revealed how traditional diets of fish and fruit had been replaced by imported canned foods, leading to high rates of diabetes and heart disease.
