It functions as a global respiratory system, serving as a shared structure that breathes for every living thing.
For a long time, humans believed the Earth was their personal property, feeling a moral duty to master nature for their own benefit. Recently, this view has changed as we recognize that we are not the masters of the world but a dependent part of a much larger system. Rather than seeing ourselves as separate from nature, we should view ourselves as nature itself. Perhaps our true role is to act as a helper for the planet by storing information, creating new connections between species, and protecting the environment.

Because every living thing likely started from one original cell, we share a fundamental chemistry with everything from grass to whales. Inside our cells, mitochondria provide the energy we need to function, yet they have their own unique DNA and were once independent bacteria.
