In 1905, Albert Einstein published a series of papers that revolutionized our understanding of reality. He proposed that the laws of science should appear the same to all freely moving observers and that the speed of light is a universal constant. This theory of special relativity required the abandonment of absolute time, meaning every individual possesses a personal time that depends on their motion. A major consequence of this new framework was the realization that mass and energy are different forms of the same thing, captured in the famous equation E=mc².

To resolve conflicts with older theories of gravity, Einstein developed the general theory of relativity. He reimagined gravity not as a traditional force, but as a direct consequence of the shape of the universe. Mass and energy warp the fabric of space and time, much like a heavy ball placed on a rubber sheet causes the surface to sag. Objects like planets or light beams simply follow the natural curves created by this warping.

This new understanding of gravity led to the realization that the universe is dynamic rather than stationary. Observations confirmed that galaxies are moving away from one another, implying the entire universe is expanding. This expansion suggests that the cosmos began in a high-density state known as the Big Bang. It also implies the universe may contain regions of extreme warping called black holes, where gravity is so strong that even light cannot escape.

While Einstein laid the groundwork for modern physics, he remained deeply skeptical of quantum mechanics, which was the second great scientific revolution of his era. Quantum theory introduced a level of randomness into the subatomic world, suggesting that particles do not have definite positions or speeds until they are measured. Einstein famously rejected this unpredictability, yet these quantum laws became the foundation for modern electronics and chemistry. Despite his personal reservations about the role of chance in nature, the theories he pioneered continue to define our search for the ultimate laws governing the cosmos.
