Early Experiments in Long Distance Communication

In 1746, a French scientist named Jean-Antoine Nollet conducted an experiment that would change how humanity perceived distance. He lined up two hundred monks, connected them with long iron wires, and administered an electric shock. The simultaneous reaction of the monks, spread over a mile, proved that electricity traveled almost instantly across great distances. This discovery suggested a world where information was no longer tied to the physical speed of a horse or a ship. For millennia, the pace of life had been dictated by how fast a messenger could travel, but now the possibility of a signaling device that bypassed these physical limits began to take shape.

While myths of magical needles and sympathetic magnets had circulated for centuries, the first practical breakthrough in long-distance communication came from Claude Chappe during the French Revolution. After failing to harness electricity, Chappe turned to a visual system. He initially used synchronized clocks and loud sounds to transmit numbers that corresponded to words in a codebook. Realizing sound was too limited by distance and wind, he replaced it with a large wooden structure featuring movable arms. This optical telegraph allowed operators to send complex messages by holding the arms in specific positions, which were then observed through telescopes by the next station in a long chain of towers.

Chappe’s invention, which he named the telegraph, or far writer, was a massive success for the French government. It allowed the central leadership in Paris to maintain a firm grip on distant provinces and receive news of military victories within an hour of their occurrence. Napoleon Bonaparte later expanded this network across Europe, and other nations like Britain and Sweden quickly developed their own versions. These systems proved that complex ideas could be reduced to simple, repeatable signals. However, these optical networks were expensive, required clear weather to function, and were strictly reserved for government and military use, leaving the lives of ordinary people largely unchanged.

Despite the dominance of the optical telegraph, the dream of an electrical version persisted. Inventors like Francis Ronalds demonstrated that electricity could trigger physical movements, such as twitching pith balls, to signal letters over wires. Ronalds envisioned a future where kings could hold councils across the country and the public could use electric communication offices. Yet, the British Admiralty and other authorities dismissed these ideas as unnecessary or eccentric. They believed the existing system of towers and shutters was sufficient. Because electricity was difficult to manage and early experiments required many wires, the electric telegraph remained a scientific curiosity, even as the world stood on the brink of a communication revolution that would eventually work in any weather, at any time, across any terrain.
