How the Mind Works Fast and Slow
The way we discuss the choices and judgments of others often happens in casual conversation. While it is easy to spot the mistakes of colleagues or friends, it is much more difficult to recognize our own. Daniel Kahneman suggests that by enriching our vocabulary with specific labels for common mental errors, we can become better at identifying these patterns in real-time. Just as a doctor must learn the names of various diseases to diagnose a patient, we need a language for biases, which are the predictable, systematic errors that occur in human thinking. Understanding these mechanisms allows us to move beyond the assumption that humans are always rational, recognizing instead that our errors are often built into the very machinery of our thought processes.
To understand how we think, it is helpful to imagine two distinct characters living within our minds. System 1 operates automatically and lightning-fast with almost no effort. It is the part of the mind that instantly detects anger in a face, completes a simple phrase, or knows basic math. It generates impressions, feelings, and inclinations that serve as the main source of our beliefs. Most of the time, we move through the world guided by these automatic responses, and they are remarkably efficient.
System 2 represents the conscious, reasoning self that we identify with. It is slow, deliberate, and requires intense focus. You use this system when you multiply complex numbers, fill out a tax form, or look for a specific person in a crowded room. Unlike the effortless automatic system, the conscious system is easily disrupted because it has a limited budget of attention. If you are focused on a difficult mental task, you can become effectively blind to the obvious, such as a person in a gorilla suit walking across a basketball court.
The effort required for these mental tasks is not just a feeling, but a physical reality that can be measured. Researchers discovered that the pupil of the eye serves as a precise indicator of mental strain. By using a camera to record subjects as they performed tasks of varying difficulty, they found that pupils dilate significantly when the mind is working hard. When the conscious mind is pushed to its maximum capacity, it protects the most important task and ignores everything else. As a person becomes more skilled at a task, the mental energy required to perform it decreases, which leads to the general law of least effort where people eventually choose the path requiring the least mental work.
The relationship between physical movement and thought reveals a great deal about how the mind manages its resources. Self-control and deliberate thought draw from the same limited pool of energy. If a person is forced to exert willpower on one task, such as resisting a plate of cookies, they will have less willpower available for the next challenge. The nervous system consumes more glucose than most other parts of the body, and intense mental activity quickly depletes these sugar levels. A study of parole judges found that they were much more likely to grant parole immediately after their food breaks, but as they became tired and hungry, they defaulted to the easiest decision of denying the request.
The laziness of the conscious mind often leads to avoidable errors in judgment. In a simple puzzle involving the cost of a bat and a ball, many people immediately answer with the first number that comes to mind rather than doing the basic math to check their intuition. Even students at elite universities frequently fail this test because they are overconfident in their initial impressions and unwilling to invest the small amount of effort required to verify them. While intelligence is the raw power of the mind, rationality is the willingness to engage the conscious mind to check one's work and resist the easy, but often wrong, answers provided by intuition.
