Introduction to the Second Machine Age
For most of human history, technological and economic progress was incredibly slow. While we often point to the domestication of animals, the birth of great religions, or the invention of writing as major milestones, these events did not drastically change the overall trajectory of human life. For thousands of years, the standard of living and the physical ability of societies to get things done remained relatively flat. It was only quite recently that a single technological development caused the curve of human progress to spike upward at a nearly vertical angle.
This dramatic shift was the direct result of the Industrial Revolution, specifically the perfection of the steam engine by James Watt in the late 1700s. Before this invention, human progress was strictly limited by the physical strength of people and domesticated animals. Watt’s engine allowed society to overcome these physical limits by generating massive amounts of mechanical energy at will. This era, known as the first machine age, replaced muscle power with machine power, leading directly to factories, mass production, and the modern industrial world.
We are now entering a second machine age, where digital technologies are doing for mental power what the steam engine did for physical power. Researchers Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee began investigating this shift after noticing that computers were suddenly mastering tasks that had long been considered impossible. Machines were suddenly driving cars, understanding natural speech, and beating humans at complex games. This transition represents a fundamental increase in our ability to use technology to understand, manipulate, and shape our environment.
This new digital era brings two major economic consequences: bounty and spread. Bounty refers to the massive increase in the volume, variety, and quality of things we can consume at a lower cost. Because digital goods can be shared almost instantly, consumers now have access to more information and services than ever before. However, spread refers to the growing gap in economic success between different groups of people. While those with highly specialized skills can use these digital tools to thrive, workers with common skills often find themselves replaced by increasingly capable machines.
The challenges brought on by this digital revolution are significant, but they are not impossible to solve. Just as the first machine age eventually addressed widespread problems like pollution and child labor through better laws and continuous innovation, the second machine age requires us to make conscious societal choices. The ultimate goal is to maximize the immense benefits of this technological surge while ensuring that the resulting prosperity is shared more widely across society. By understanding the forces at play, we can design policies that help everyone succeed.
